The text on the reverse of this equestrian portrait names the subject as Maharana Pratap Singh astride his favourite horse Chetak. Pratap Singh, riding Chetak, led his troops against the Mughal army, under the command of Man Singh of Amber, at the battle of Haldighati in 1576. The Mewar ruler credited the horse with saving his life and there is a monument built at Haldighati in memory of Chetak. We find it quite compelling and dramatic, but not complicated to stitch. It is one of as series of Indian art.
