This sumptuous flower design was adapted from the twelve months of flowers, a set of prints displayed in the Essex Alcove at Winterthur in Delaware. The growing fascination with flowers and gardens during the 17th and 18th centuries was reflected in Dutch and Flemish flower paintings of the time. This image is from a set of elegant flower paintings of great botanical accuracy, by Dutch artist Pieter Casteels, published as prints by John Bowles in London 1744 – 1745. Sets of prints were fashionable in Europe and America throughout the 18th century.
