Description
Though he rejected the term, Degas is one of the founders of Impressionism, beloved for his paintings of dancers, ballerinas and singers, and equally accomplished in the subject of portraits and race horses and horse racing. Race Day is a singularly lovely example suitable for needlepoint of his use of movement, color and light at the track. At the Races in the Countryside depicts his friend Paul Valpincon and his family at the races. It is a casual composition resembling a spontaneous snapshot, revealing the recent influence of photography. Measures 9″ x 14.5″ – as the smaller of several sizes – on 14, 16 or 18 mesh mono deluxe needlepoint canvas.
