Product Description

Do you have books with lots of stitches and aren't sure how to apply decorative stitches?  Do you find shading with threads difficult?

You can follow a stitch guide and know how to do a certain stitch, but do you know why?

Our retreat centers around you - your ability - your commitment and passion to needlepoint.

You'll learn lots of techniques from master stitchers who teach not only the how but the why - why you choose a certain stitch for a certain spot.

You'll learn how to effectively shade in a number of different ways with almost any thread.

Be absorbed in a fun weekend with lots to do with like minded people in an estate that houses the world's largest collection of antique decorative furniture and objects - and an extensive collection of handwork!

Get a little history of our needlepoint lineage from textile curators and tour the beautiful botanical gardens that surround the estate.

Registration includes everything you need and then some.

  • Our goal is to have you select the canvas that most appeals to you - provide you with the appropriate materials - create a learning environment in which you are an active part

The retreat includes:
  •  two classes each day - three hour and one and a half hour classes
  • see museum pieces not seen by the general public
  • tours of the museum and gardens
  • lectures by guest textile curator and historian
  • food during the day and evenings
  • merriment and take home goodies
  • choose your canvas or choose your teacher.
  • Each class will involve learning how to shade effectively - from beginner to more advanced - and discuss various techniques and stitches and why you use them for greater effect.  There is a separate page detailing the teachers and the kits.

When you register we will be sending you a schedule, bio of the teachers, full class descriptions to help you sign up for the class  you want.  On this form you can also click to register your kit.

Register and PAY IN FULL by December 15, 2017 and Save 5% with code NeedlepointRetreat - all one word - in the discount code box at checkout, or with us on the phone.

A deposit can be made anytime and the balance is needed by February 1, 2018 to ensure you get the class you want.

However, we encourage you to select and register in full by December, 2017 as certain classes will fill up before then, as some are already nearing the maximum number.

You may select from the kits at any time prior to January 15th, 2018.  The earlier you indicate what you want to work on will be best so that we have a good idea of class sizes - a class may fill up with a particular teacher and we absolutely want everyone to have personalized attention when stitching.

Our needlepoint retreat is an adventure into a different time. A world of beauty.  A world of antiques.  A world of history. A WORLD OF NEEDLEWORK.  Founded by Henry Francis du Pont, Winterthur (pronounced “winter-tour”) is the premier museum of American decorative arts, reflecting both early America and the du Pont family’s life here. Its many acre naturalistic gardens are among the country’s best, and its research library serves scholars from around the world.
We invite you to visit and explore this place of beauty, history, and learning.

Children between 10 and 18 are invited to attend for free. We intend to add a special class for beginning needlepoint for children who come free. Each child will have a canvas and will learn beginning and ending threads, weft and warp of canvas, basketweave, continental tent stitch, and some other stitches such as mosaic , scotch, and Gobelin.
