Monet, Manet and Other Rebellious Artists

Wednesday, May 06, 2009
In the early 1870's  a new school of painting was exhibited in Paris. By attempting a new way of painting light and its effect so that is palpitates with movement and life, Impressionists, known then as Naturalists or even Intransigents, were rather avant garde. If you want an interesting read, get a copy of the Ultimate Trophy: How the Impressionist Painting Conquered the World by Philip Hook. A very readable book. You are sure to learn a lot, such as how "they escheded black, for example, conscious that shadow was actually composed of other colors, mostly purples and blues" and how this artistic rebellion became an enduring fashion.
